Relieving pain with acupuncture

Email from HArVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL : Link from HERE. The ancient art of acupuncture has been practiced for centuries in Asia, and has more recently spread to the United States and other Western countries. Acupuncture has been used to treat most pain conditions, including low back pain, shingles and other nerve pain, hand and knee pain, headache, fibromyalgia, and menstrual pain. For people with knee pain, for example, there is some evidence that acupuncture may provide some pain relief, although results from different studies are mixed. Acupuncture Needles A large 2004 study published in Annals of Internal Medicine found that people with knee osteoarthritis who had acupuncture for six months reported less pain and better function than people who received sham acupuncture (no needles actually inserted) or participated in an arthritis education program. A meta-analysis published in 2007 in Annals of Internal Medicine showed conflicting results. In this latter study, acupuncture l...

LIGHT Vs HEALTH

Dear All, When I checked my E-mail this Morning, I got this news. It is from HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL PUBLICATION. Light from laptops, TVs, electronics, and energy-efficient lightbulbs may harm health Humans once spent their nights in relative darkness. No longer. When the sun sets, TVs, computers, mobile devices, and artificial lighting burn on. The May issue of the Harvard Health Letter reports that this aspect of modern life may be great for efficiency, but not for health. At night, light throws the body’s biological clock—the circadian rhythm—out of whack. Sleep suffers. The combination of poor sleep and exposure to artificial light exposure may contribute to a number of health problems. Studies have linked working the night shift and getting exposed to light at night to several types of cancer (including breast and prostate cancer), diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. It’s not exactly clear why nighttime light exposure seems to be problematic. It could be because exposure...

10 SIMPLE STEPS TO HELP DE-STRESS

dEAR ALL, There is no shortage of angst-inducing news these days: natural disasters, economic woes, political unrest. Add to this backdrop stresses in our personal lives, layoffs, illness, money woes, temper tantrums, and traffic jams, and it is clear that stressful situations are constant and inevitable. Just as serious as the stressors themselves are the adverse effects stress can have on your emotional and physical health. Many well-respected studies link stress to heart disease and stroke — the No. 1 and No. 3 causes of death, respectively, in the United States. Stress is also implicated in a host of other ailments such as depression and anxiety, chronic lower respiratory diseases, asthma flare-ups, rheumatoid arthritis, and gastrointestinal problems. Stress is not all bad. Your perception of a real or imagined threat can spark the stress response, which prepares the body to fight or flee. That swift reflex was encoded in you for survival. Thanks to the stress response, you ...

TB-CARE ACTIVITY, AN EFFECTIVE DEVELOPMENT AID BY ENHANCHING STUDENTS PARTICIPATION IN DIRECTLY OBSERVED TERAPHY (DOT) PROGRAM TO MINIMIZE TB-CASE

By: Sri Hindriyastuti It was rainy day, I traveled a mile away, following my student by her motorcycle. We were going to specific village, namely Jabungan. It was the first time for me finding this remote area around a crowded area, our campus. Finally, an hour later, we reached for a weird place, a muddy area around, a small and modest house with a dusty wall. What a place!. Then we entered a house and met with the person we want to meet. He is an old man, 63 years old, wearing the mask covering his mouth. Surely he did it to prevent the spread of his disease through the air. That old man, Mr Paijo, suffer from Tuberculosis (TB). We are not a doctor, but we are academicians, a teacher and a student of nursing program of Diponegoro University. We came there to observe and guide the medication of TB to Mr Paijo as our program in TB-care activity. This is not only the first time for us of doing the same procedure, guiding and monitoring the treatment of TB case. We want to make sure ...

8 simple steps to a healthier, stronger you When you hear the term “strength training,” perhaps you envision a bodybuilder with bulging biceps and rippling abdominal muscles. However, strength and power training can benefit people of all ages and athletic abilities — whether you are 40 or 85, well toned or unable to rise from a wheelchair without assistance. And while strength training can leave your body looking leaner and fitter, it need not make you look muscle-bound. Studies attest that strength training, as well as aerobic exercise, can help you manage and sometimes prevent conditions as varied as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis. But chief among its health benefits is its ability to protect vitality and make everyday tasks more manageable. Over the years, muscle tissue, bone density, and strength dwindle. So, too, does muscle power. These changes can make once-simple tasks like climbing a flight of stairs or carrying a bag of groceries difficult. By focu...
